Best for a large group, caveats

I have owned one of these for many years and it is my go to for large groups. It has the highest flow rate that I am aware of. Also, due to solid metal housing it is incredibly robust. A few things to be aware of. The filter element itself is ceramic, which is fragile. The ceramic itself is a very thin cylindrical layer, maybe a quarter inch, the interior houses small silver impregnated pebbles Dropping, or freezing while wet may easily crack the element despite the metal housing. Micro cracks in the element due to rough handling can allow bacteria through. When not in use, I store my elements in 4” ABS pipe lined with foam cut to fit the interior. This has done an excellent job of protecting my elements. Another thing to consider: these elements are larger than the Katadyn Pocket Filters but, while the flow rate is quadruple on the Expedition, the lifespan of each element under ideal conditions is only double that of the Pocket. So for significantly more cost and bulk, you are really getting higher flow rate. Which is why I recommend this for a large group or camp. Otherwise your money will likely be better spent on the Katadyn Pocket Filter and additional elements for it, which will produce far more water for less money. You should also consider adding a Steripen or Mioxx Pen to the Pocket or an MSR SE 200 to an Expedition to add rapid purification to your rapid filtration. Secondary treatment is still necessary if your source water has viral pathogens- use UV or halogens.
